I don’t know what it is about becoming an adult where Christmas just isn’t the same as it was when I was a kid. It was as if some of the magic had disappeared. Know what I mean?
But then I had my own kids. And guess what? That same magic reappeared. And it is even better. Because I get to see the magic and wonder through my kid’s eyes. I feel their excitement as they rush down the stairs Christmas morning and I love the expressions on their faces as they open up their gifts.
And this year, my boys are 4 and 7, and I feel like this is kind of a turning point for them. They’re more into the same stuff than they’ve ever been before so that meant less toddler and more grade-school-aged things.
It still made these 2 the absolute BEST to shop for – because it challenged me to look for lots of non-toy items. My boys still love the weird, the different, the creepy, and the crawly. So get ready for some tried-and-true favorites and some new faces. Plus, a few items that you guys have been bugging me to get links for!
These gifts will help develop creativity, nurture curiosity, and give these two an awesome Christmas. Plus, I’ve got thrills and guaranteed smiles built into this list!

Christmas Gift Guide for Boys
This gift made it to the top of my list because it's the one where my kids are excited every time it gets delivered and they're learning as they play! Bitsbox is a monthly subscription that teaches your kids how to code. Made for kids ages 6-12 years old, each level introduces a new computer science concept with a set of crazy-fun app projects that come every month! I get this for my kids and I think it's the perfect gift to give AND receive. This would be perfect for your kids (both boys and girls)! You'll never get two months the same and your kids build REAL LIFE APPS - it's kinda insane! And you can use code 'TARA20' for $20 off any subscription purchase of $50 or more!
I know that pajamas with candy canes and polar bears, or ones that make your kids resemble elves are super popular this type of year, but I prefer something simple and comfy - and so do my boys. Seasonal jammies tend to be cheap fabric that's itchy and shrinks. These pajamas are so soft and really hold up well. So when it comes to "Christmas" jammies, I tend to stick with simple, but timeless. Trust me, these will be your kid's favorites! Emery wishes SO bad these came in her size!
My boys love these stories! George and Harold have created a new breed of justice - one that is part dog, part man, and ALL HERO! With the head of a dog and the body of a human, this heroic hound digs into deception, claws after crooks, rolls over robbers, and scampers after squirrels. Easy enough for Dash to read and Jett to understand. These books have provided endless hours or entertainment and bonding with my boys.
Most of you probably think I'm crazy giving a kid a knife but Dash (not Jett) is at the age where a knife is something he is responsible enough to receive and taught to handle with care. If you've got mischievous boys, you might end up with a hole (or two) where you hadn't intended. But I have found, more often than not, that if you've got a kid who's a bit destructive, a lack of knife won't stop them. This comes with a fire-starter as well and is perfect as he starts cub scouts!
Gross? Yes. Disgusting? Most definitely! Will your boys think this is the coolest thing ever? Yup. You'll probably win Mother Of The Year just for putting up with the nastiness of this thing. But your boys will think you're the coolest mom EVER! They can cut open their own alien to extract a prize in the gooey innards of the alien. Think of it this way, you could be training a future dr.!
This skews more on the young end but these bikes have proven time and time again to be the best bike for training your kid for the real thing. It comes sans training wheels so your child never becomes dependent on them. If you've got a kid dying for a big boy bike, this is the perfect place to start!
Also, Jett loves that this one has a foot rest!
Bonus with this gift: even if your kid doesn't like it, you and your husband can race on them! They're super fun, require body movement, and can be ridden in the house (or an empty basement) while there is snow on the ground. They're super fun and even the smallest of kids will have a blast on this one! We still use ones we got for Emery and Anisten when they were teeny so they last forever!
These are a two-fer gift. Your boys and YOU will have a good time when they're wearing these. They're rechargeable, cordless, and have a built-in mic. So they're great in the car with an iPad or for that budding gamer. And you can thank me when you can no longer hear your kids annoying games or cartoons.
This is the one game my boys BEG to play and it's so much fun as a family. Fair warning, if you've got kids that are competitive, this game can get lively! But it's super easy to learn, fun for large numbers (just buy multiple decks), and can keep the troops entertained for hours! A super family-friendly fun game!
#1 HIGHEST RATED AND #1 BEST ANT HABITAT: The cool blue LED lights give the kit extra awesomeness! Apart from making it look beautiful, the lights encourage ants to dig further, creating huge, intricate tunnels! This live ecosystem will be a magnificent spectacle for your kids and is bound to be their favorite educational-science game! Batteries are not needed or included with our product. The LED light simply needs to be plugged into a standard electric outlet using the included power adapter.
Because I love my kids, I am definitely getting them all a pair of polarized sunglasses. It's never too early to start protecting your kid's eyes and all of mine are at the age where wearing sunglasses is cool! Plus, snow glare is a real thing and can make the sun that much more dangerous to your kid's eyes! Plus, my boys want to be just like dad & these ones are just too cute! They fit both my boys so great!
K, there is nothing cooler than being a kid with a walkie talkie. Jett and Dash drag these around the house and hide from each other just so they can use these bad boys. They're really fun, make everything feel a little secret, and I don't care how old you are, talking to someone through a walkie talkie is still magical!
Five award-winning games that transform your iPad into a hands-on learning tool. Turns core subjects, like math (numbers) and spelling (words), into fearless fun. The Osmo encourages visual thinking (Tangram), problem-solving (Newton), and creative drawing skills (masterpiece).
Every kid should have a scooter and none are more fun or versatile than the Micro. It's got two wheels on the front for added stability and is appropriate for kids of all ages. My boys ride these around the neighborhood and it seems every kid's got one. Plus, if you're a parent who gets one big gift and then small treats, this one packs a "WOW!"
If there is one toy I would make sure is on your list, it's this bug terrarium/catcher. Jett carried this around the ENTIRE summer. If you've been a here a while, you've seen him buckled into his car seat clutching this thing every time we got in the car. He could put all his rolly pollys and wiggly worms in here and cart them around. It comes with a net and opens at the top to carefully place all your new bug friends inside. Better in this than loose inside your house!
I'm a proud mom. I'm raising a few book worms and there is nothing better than staying up and reading a few pages of your favorite book before you go to sleep. But if your kids share a room like my boys do, I don't want them to leave the lights on to do so. Jett is to young to be staying up any longer and this book light is the perfect solution! This was a major hit with Emery and now it's a right of passage for every kid. Plus, it comes in handy on late night road trips when interior lights make the driver a little crazy! This one is rechargeable and amazing!
The first time I handed my kiddos this box of Wiki Stix, they literally played silently for an hour. AN HOUR OF MESS AND NOISE FREE PLAY. Can I get a hallelujah?! I love these for church, restaurants, airplanes, or any other place you need your kids to sit silently and not cause chaos. If you haven't seen these before, they are basically wax sticks you can twist, mold, and shape into about a million different creations. Super great for teaching letters and shapes too! And this one makes the list because it has a case...and you guys know how much I love a container for your stuff.
Bath bombs are to girls what these color bath drops are to my boys. They love tossing one or two of these (or 17 if I'm not looking!) in their bath water to make it a fun color! It's even fun to combine two colors to make a new color - educational and fun! These make a great stocking stuffer and are fun for all ages! They also have multiple sizes inside of them!
This is a game that is usually in my purse or in my kid's backpack. You can take it out at restaurants, games, roadtrips, and it makes the time pass that much quicker. Plus, I'm a BIG fan of games that make it so my kids spend time with one another. This fun "I Spy" esque matching game is fun and fast-paced!
Get a handy way to play the classic property-trading game! Be the first collect 3 full property sets of different colors, and you’ll win the Monopoly Deal Card Game. You’ll pick up cards when it's your turn and play Action cards to charge players rent, steal their cards or demand money for your birthday. Build up property sets, gather piles of money and keep wheeling and dealing until you're the Monopoly Deal winner!
Can I be honest? I was kinda hoping my boys would skip this stage. But the weird thing is, they hang out with other boys their age and you CAN'T escape this. So, instead of finding all those Pokemon cards lying around the house, in my car, and retrieving them from the trash, they go in here. This is SACRED. This is their home! And your boys will love flipping through their cards with this bad boy!
This is the gift that will have you second-guessing your decisions as a mother. But the moment you ride this thing the night before you put it under the tree for your kid, you'll realize you did make the right decision and that you have many more joy rides in your future. It's a great alternative to the real thing, goes up to 14 miles per hour, and is a great practice bike if your kid wants to get into the real thing!
The Gizmo watch is perfect for when you want your kids to be able to call you but aren’t quite ready for them to have access to all the dark secrets of the internet. So basically my kids will have these till they’re 35. Really though, we’ve had and loved these for years. SO WORTH IT.
If you are in the market for a game console and are unsure of which one to get, the Switch should be at the top of your list. Great for single play, playing with a friend, or even hooking up to the tv and playing with a group - this is the updated version of gaming we all wished we had when we were kids. Your kids will love this one!
My friend told me about this and I snatched one up for my boys for Christmas. A few of our neighbors have this and I am so surprised by how durable it is. I know this is going to get used for years and years to come!
K truth moment: My kids love these. Me? Not a fan but this holiday is about them, right? We have given these as birthday gifts for a long time and they're a hit every time. You dig out 15 things... all real fossils AND shark teeth which my boys think is the coolest!
I got this game when my girls were little and the boys and I just played it last night. It is so fun! Basically bingo for kids. The little chips are cute & there is something magical about that teeny machine that pops them out too! ;)
