First of all, what is Molluscum Contagiosum besides little nasty, impossible to get rid of bumps?! People also call them “water warts” because it is easily passed around at swimming pools!
Here is what the internet has to say about them…
“Molluscum contagiosum (mo-LUS-kum kun-tay-jee-OH-sum) is a relatively common viral infection of the skin that results in round, firm, painless bumps ranging in size from a pinhead to a pencil eraser. If the bumps are scratched or injured, the infection can spread to surrounding skin. Molluscum contagiosum also spreads through person-to-person contact and contact with infected objects.
Though most common in children, molluscum contagiosum can affect adults as well — particularly those with weakened immune systems. The bumps associated with molluscum contagiosum usually disappear within a year without treatment but doctor-assisted removal is also an option.”
K.. how do you know if your kid has these terribly contagious, annoying as heck bumps? Well here is what the internet has to say about that too..
Signs and symptoms of molluscum contagiosum include bumps on the skin that:
- Are raised, round and flesh colored
- Are small — typically under about 1/4 inch (smaller than 6 millimeters) in diameter
- Characteristically have a small indentation (umbilication) or dot at the top near the center
- Can become red and inflamed
- May be itchy
- Can be easily removed by scratching or rubbing, which can spread the virus to adjacent skin
- Usually appear on the face, neck, armpits, arms and tops of the hands in children
So now, let’s chat… I honestly receive at least multiple DMs daily asking for the info on Molluscum that I posted in January… I’m gonna add photos here. It’s gross. If you are not here looking for info on it, ya might wanna skip on by because it’s about to get nasty. Dash had the worst case of molluscum I’ve ever witnessed. It was miserable. It got infected and overnight, they spread across his whole body. It was miserable. Did I mention it was miserable?? haha. Emery + Anisten also had it but NO where near as bad. It’s super contagious, so I still thank my lucky stars that I didn’t catch it trying to cure it. Ready??
You’ve been warned…
Thankfully it never spread to his face.
Truth be told, he only had about 10 or so of the bumps on his body initially. Then that one on the side of his knee that you see in the above picture got infected. He woke up to it super itchy and I noticed a weird ring around it. Within hours, he had a rash over his entire body. Took him into the doctor and they told us his body was having a reaction to the molluscum that was infected and it caused his whole body to flare up. Wild right?!
So, okay. Now that we got those out there you probably want to know how we solved it, right?? Yes. You didn’t come here just to look at these pictures and sympathize haha. I will preface by saying 1) I am not a doctor and this is not professional medical advice + 2) I am not an oil expert, I know just enough to know what helps when I need it.
Oregano Oil – This is *spicy* and definitely can burn your skin. For the older girls I just put it on a cotton ball and dabbed it all over their Molluscum with a cotton ball and covered it with a band-aid. I left it on as much as they could handle it. The first night we did it, they did great. The second night, it was tender. They still let me do it but just know, it was tender. They could definitely handle the burn, Dash? No way. It was too much.
Use the oregano oil from above, but dilute it in this fractionated coconut oil.. it definitely takes a bit longer to heal because you’re weakening the oregano oil, but it still helped + was the only thing that did for us. Dash could definitely tolerate this mixture! Basically, it was trial and error for the combination. Aim to use the least amount of coconut oil as possible, but definitely make it comfortable for the kiddos. You can mix it up in some of these droppers to have on hand easily!
Click HERE to shop the oils.. if you don’t think you need to dilute just remove the coconut oil from the cart.
If you think oils are crazy and don’t work…. look at these results!! I have gotten so many more of them too!
If you’ve had luck with this method, pleaseeee tell me!! I would love to add more testimony here. I feel like people are sometimes super hesitant about oil remedies – but in this case when there really isn’t a lot of other options, it’s so helpful! As always, I’m happy to answer any questions out there about it! 🙂 Just shoot me a DM!
