The Native Deodorant Challenge

Let me start this by saying, I’m a loyalist. Once I find a product I love, that’s it! I stick by it through thick and thin and usually don’t hunt for an alternative – you know me, I’ve already tested 500 different versions to get the one I like.

And this year I have been on the hunt for a healthier-for-me deodorant alternative. And I knew before embarking on this adventure that there was going to be a “transition period.” From sweatier pits and stinky B.O. to yellow armpit stains on my white shirts, the road was a bit bumpy! However, having been around the block when it comes to testing aluminum-free sticks, roll-ons, and one charcoal-based cream, I have to say that one has emerged as a new favorite.

After my last round of deodorant testing, I was ready to throw in the towel. But when Leanne Barlow challenged me to try Native’s deodorant that is formulated without aluminum, parabens, and sulfates and has over 9,000+ 5-star reviews, I decided to give my natural deodorant journey one more go! Plus, at drugstore prices, it beat my $16 per stick that I was currently purchasing!

The Challenge

So what did this challenge entail? Give up my favorite deodorant for 2 weeks and try Native’s cleaner formula to see how it holds up! Native sent me a few options of scents (they’ve got 10 just for women and more for men and teens + you can customize your own!) and I started the challenge as soon as I was home from Thailand.

Native is never tested on animals and offers free shipping + returns (plus all those safe ingredients I told you about).

I put my favorite deodorant on the shelf and applied a thin layer of Native deodorant in the morning (the solid stick went on totally clear — no white deo chunks in sight), and went about my day. And then I reapplied…and reapplied…and reapplied. This was pretty much the pattern those first few days. I had been told about the transition period but didn’t know entirely what that meant.

It’s A Deodorant – Not An Antiperspirant

One thing to know right off the bat is that Native is a deodorant, not an antiperspirant. Antiperspirants are those unhealthy, pore-blocking, sweat-duct clogging, and aluminum-packed sticks that prevent you from sweating. Deodorant, on the other hand, works by neutralizing odor-causing bacteria and uses absorbent ingredients to keep you feeling dry.

Spoiler alert: you won’t feel dry. But it’s not because you’re all of the sudden super sweaty. It’s because you haven’t felt what it is to sweat in so long, that any moisture is going to feel a little bit like a Slip ‘n Slide. But don’t worry, that feeling doesn’t last long. And within a few days, the coconut oil, probiotics (L. Acidophilus) and baking soda with their natural antibacterial properties and the tapioca starch that helps absorb trace amounts of wetness starts to do its job. The shea butter (along with coconut oil) also helps keep your underarm skin feeling hydrated — which is definitely a bonus if you shave regularly and are prone to irritation/bumps/itching.

I’m a Fan!

Another thing about me is that I’ve got 2 tweens that are wanting to do everything. Shaving, more grown up rooms, fancy deodorant – and I want to start them out on the right foot! I want them to have clean, healthy habits when it comes to what they put in and on their bodies. So I had them do the challenge with me – and we all love it!  Native actually works pretty well. And at a price point that won’t make me feel bad about stocking up on all my fave scents.

So some of this is going in Braun’s stocking and Emery and Anisten’s as well. While there are many things we are not, this Christmas we will definitely be the best smelling!
